Can You Take a Roll-On on a Plane? Travel Tips for Your Comfort Routine

By Mark from Outback, The Outback Series customer care6 min read
The short answer
- Yes. A roll-on in a container of 3.4 ounces (100 mL) or less can go in your carry-on. It goes inside your one quart-size clear bag of liquids, gels and creams. As of fall 2026, the TSA 3-1-1 rule is still in place.
- A 50mL (1.7 fl oz) roll-on fits with room to spare. Larger bottles, sprays and pumps go in your checked bag.
- Pack it upright in a small zip bag with the cap on tight, and apply it about 30 minutes before you sit for a long stretch and again when you land.
The TSA liquids rule in plain English
TSA calls it the 3-1-1 rule, and it applies to anything you can pour, pump, spread, spray or roll on:
- 3: each container must be 3.4 ounces (100 mL) or smaller.
- 1: all of those containers fit in one clear, quart-size, zip-top bag.
- 1: one bag per traveler.
The limit is about the size of the container, not how much is left inside. A half-empty 5 oz bottle will still be pulled at the checkpoint. Check the small print on the label for the size: our roll-on says 1.7 fl oz (50mL) right on the front.
Your checked bag has no size limit for toiletries, so full-size bottles can travel there. TSA updates its rules from time to time, so check the TSA liquids page a few days before you fly.
What goes where: carry-on or checked
| Item | Carry-on | Checked bag |
|---|---|---|
| Roll-on, 50mL (1.7 fl oz) | Yes, in your quart bag | Yes |
| Single-use oil towelettes (sachets) | Yes. TSA allows wet wipes in carry-ons | Yes |
| Cream in a 2 oz tube | Yes, in your quart bag | Yes |
| Oil spray, 150mL (5 oz) | No, it is over 3.4 oz | Yes |
| Pump bottle, 300mL (10 oz) | No, it is over 3.4 oz | Yes |
| Capsules and tablets | Yes, they are not liquids | Yes |
Solid stick products are not liquids either, so a solid stick deodorant can ride outside your quart bag. Gel and liquid roll-ons count as liquids.
How to pack a roll-on so it does not leak
Cabin pressure changes during the climb and descent. That can push a little liquid past a cap that is not fully closed. A few simple habits stop it:
- Twist the cap until it stops. Then give it one more check before you zip the bag.
- Bag it twice. Put the roll-on in a small zip bag of its own, then into your quart bag. If anything escapes, it stays put.
- Keep it upright. An outside pocket of your carry-on, standing up, is the best spot. It is also the easiest to reach at security.
- Open it pointing away from you the first time after landing, and wipe the ball with a tissue.
Mark's tipPack one in your quart bag and one in your checked bag. If your suitcase takes a detour, you still have your routine with you. Customers who travel a lot also tuck a couple of single-use sachets into a jacket pocket for the seat.
A simple comfort routine for travel day
Long travel days mean hours of sitting, carrying bags and sleeping in odd positions. A few minutes here and there keep you moving and comfortable.
Before you leave the house
Apply your roll-on to the spots that tend to get stiff when you sit for a long time, such as your lower back, knees, neck or feet. Massage it in for about 30 seconds. Doing it about 30 minutes before you sit down for the drive or the flight works well.
At the gate and in your seat
- Walk while you wait. Skip the moving walkway and do a lap of the terminal.
- Book an aisle seat if you can, so getting up does not mean climbing over anyone.
- Every hour or so: 10 ankle circles each way, 10 slow shoulder rolls, and a few seated knee lifts.
- Stand and stretch when the seat belt sign is off.
- Drink water. Go easy on alcohol, and support your neck with a travel pillow if you plan to sleep.
After you land
Walk as much as you comfortably can on the way out. Once you reach the hotel or your family's house, apply again and spend two minutes on your neck and shoulders or your feet. Then wipe away any oil still sitting on the skin if you would rather the scent did not linger.
Flying outside the US
Most countries use a similar limit of 100 mL per container in one clear bag. Some airports with newer scanners have relaxed their rules, but it varies, and the airport you fly home from may be stricter than the one you left from. Pack for the strictest airport on your trip and you will not lose anything at security.

Shop OutbackFrequently asked questions
Can I bring a roll-on in my carry-on?
Yes, as long as the container is 3.4 ounces (100 mL) or smaller and it goes in your quart-size liquids bag. A 50mL (1.7 fl oz) roll-on is well under the limit.
Does a roll-on count as a liquid at TSA?
Liquid and gel roll-ons count as liquids and go in your quart bag. Solid stick products, like stick deodorant, do not.
Can I take massage oil on a plane?
Yes. In your carry-on it must be in a container of 3.4 ounces or less inside your quart bag. Larger bottles go in your checked bag.
Do I have to take my liquids bag out at security?
It depends on the checkpoint. Lanes with newer CT scanners, and TSA PreCheck lanes, often let you leave it in your bag. Follow what the officer tells you.
Will a roll-on leak on a plane?
It can if the cap is loose, because cabin pressure changes. Close it fully, keep it upright, and put it in its own small zip bag inside your quart bag.
How early should I order before a trip?
Orders placed by 2pm ET ship the same business day and usually arrive in 3 to 7 days. Ordering a week and a half ahead gives you a comfortable cushion.
