The four Outback Oil ingredients: tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil, olive oil and vanilla

What's inside

Tea tree oil, 4.25%

Active ingredient, topical analgesic

Australian tea tree oil from the coastal north of New South Wales. It is the ingredient that builds over days of steady use.

Eucalyptus oil, 3.86%

Active ingredient, topical analgesic

Blue Mallee eucalyptus, a species found only in Australia and known for its high cineole content. It gives the first soothing feeling and most of the scent.

Olive oil

Inactive, the base

A light olive oil chosen after testing more than 20 varieties. It is mild on the skin, carries the oils in and soaks in in about 30 seconds without a greasy film.

Vanilla

Inactive

A vanilla blend that rounds out the scent. Most people describe Outback as smelling like vanilla and eucalyptus, fading within minutes.

Outback Oil is blended in small batches in Australia. It is the same four-ingredient formula behind Elmore Oil, used in Australia since 1998.

What's not inside

  • No menthol and no camphor, the ingredients that make most rubs feel icy or hot
  • No capsaicin, the chili pepper extract that makes skin burn
  • No lidocaine or numbing agents
  • No methyl salicylate, the wintergreen compound in many sports rubs

Those ingredients work by creating a strong sensation on the skin. Outback does not. You should feel nothing on the skin except a light oil that disappears as you rub it in.

Outback Oil vs Outback Pain Cream

They are two different products, and online listings sometimes mix them up.

How to use Outback Oil

  • Apply a small amount to the area and rub it in until absorbed, about 30 seconds.
  • Use at least twice a day, morning and bedtime. For the first 7 to 14 days you can use it up to 4 times a day, then as needed.
  • Apply 30 minutes before an activity that usually bothers you, and again after.
  • If you can still smell it after 15 minutes, you used more than you need. A thin layer works best.

Side effects and safety

Most people have no side effects. Our customer service records show skin sensitivity in roughly 1 in 700 customers, usually people sensitive to tea tree oil. Follow these label directions and tips:

  • For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes.
  • If you have sensitive skin or have reacted to tea tree oil before, test a small spot first and wait a day.
  • Do not use with a heating pad or cover the area with a tight bandage.
  • Stop using it and ask a doctor if redness or irritation develops.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask a health professional before use. For children under 2, ask a doctor.
  • If you take prescription medicine or have a medical condition, check with your doctor before use.
  • Keep out of reach of children. If swallowed, get medical help or contact Poison Control.
  • Store below 86°F (30°C).
